Governor Newsom Declares State of Emergency to Areas Hardest Hit by Devastating Flooding – Latest Road Closures

On Sunday, February 4th as southern Californians were experiencing effects of massive rainfall amounts and flooding in many areas, Governor Gavin Newson declared a State of Emergency covering Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

One of the first evacuation orders anticipating mudslides was issued for Santa Maria Rd North of Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains was issued Saturday night instructing residents to “LEAVE IMMEDIATELY” as authorities believed there is an immediate threat to life.

Multiple canyon roads throughout the Santa Monica Mountain areas are closed due to dangerous conditions.

Closed – Malibu Canyon Road B/T Mullholland and Malibu Crest

Closed – Piuma Road B/T Las Virgenes and Cold Creek

Closed – Topanga Canyon B/T Robinson Road and Highvale Trail

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Multiple vehicles submerged on Piuma Road (CHP handle).

Minor mudslide off Cornell Road, Agoura Hills (CHP handle, Public Works has been notified).

Vehicle submerged on Balkins Drive – Agoura Hills.

10 foot boulder on N/B Malibu Canyon Road, 2 miles north of PCH (CALTRANS enroute).

Minor mudslide at 28900 Eagleton Steet, Agoura Hills (Public Works notified).

The National Weather Service has been predicting devastating and potential “life threatening” conditions for the last week.

The latest weather conditions via National Weather Service as of 5:08 a.m. shows
moderate rain continuing to stream across LA county and eastern Ventura county. Rain rates 0.10-0.25 inches per hour.

FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS and FLOOD ADVISORIES remain in effect for parts for LA/Ventura counties.

“California: this is a serious storm with dangerous and potentially life threatening impacts” said Newsom in a statement. “Please pay attention to any emergency orders or alerts from local officials. California is ready with a record number of emergency assets to respond to the impacts of this storm.”

Editor-in-Chief Cece Woods founded Malibu Daily News in 2021.

Woods began publishing in 2013, creating the lifestyle publication 90265 Magazine. One year later, she launched The Local Malibu, an activism-based platform, in 2014.
